Nike Sneakers

When University of Oregon track and field coach Bill Bowerman collaborated with his student Phil Knight, magic happened. In 1964, the two created a shoe company called Blue Ribbon Sports. You probably know that company by its current name and its iconic logo: Nike. With its Swoosh branding, Nike shoes quickly gained a foothold in the market and, today, the company continues to produce exceptional footwear designed with the athlete in mind.

Nike Sneaker Standouts

The brand’s success comes from its innovative mix of materials, its continual search for new technologies and its consistently exceptional Nike sneaker silhouettes. Nike’s first shoe, created expressly for the 1972 Olympic trials, was unofficially called the "moon shoe,” and Bowerman even handmade the sneakers, forever changing the shoe game with his waffled outsole design. That same year, Nike unveiled the Cortez, a track shoe with cushioning, a first in the track-and-field shoe realm. In the mid-’70s, Nike began branching out into other sports shoes, creating everything from basketball sneakers to racing shoes like the Tailwind. By the early 1980s, Nike really hit its stride. It rolled out its Air Force 1, the first sneaker to employ the Air unit. Other releases in that decade included the Air Pegasus and the first pair of Air Jordan. In 1987, the first Air Max sneaker debuted, sporting a visible Air Sole unit in the shoe’s heel and launching a thousand other iterations.

Just Do It

The end of the ’80s brought about Nike’s “Just Do It” slogan, kicking off a new decade of shoes like the Air Max 90, Huarache, Air Max 95, Air Max 97 and the Shox. At the turn of the millennia, Nike began lightening up its releases with cutting-edge materials like Flyknit uppers and React foam midsole cushioning. Today, the ever-present Nike brand is a leader in apparel, sports shoes and accessories for athletes and athleisure aficionados alike. But Nike’s sneaker line remains at the top of the heap, offering shoes for any sport, style or goal. Let Hibbett | City Gear provide you with the most exclusive selection of Nike sneakers available in men’s, women’s and children’s sizing.
